Which life events can increase the likelihood of developing an eating disorder?

In the case it can be helpful to hear/see, I wanted to list out some specific life events and experiences that could make an individual more vulnerable and susceptible to developing a disordered relationship with food, their body or exercise.

This is certainly not meant to be an exclusive list and not every one of these has official research stats about them, but that doesn’t make them any less real or any less valid. I have seen these be vulnerable times for many individuals.

  • Pregnancy/fertility

  • Miscarriage

  • Postpartum

  • Menopause

  • Changes in body ability

  • Transitioning from athlete to non-athlete

  • Experiencing a major health condition, such as a food allergy, cancer, diabetes, PCOS or digestive issues

  • Any time a person experiences pain in their body and/or where they body isn’t functioning “optimally”

  • Undergoing a major medical procedure

  • If you have been a victim of abuse (sexual, physical, emotional, etc)

  • Early childhood gastrointestinal issues

  • Food Insecurity

  • Poverty

  • Loss (ex. of a loved one)

  • Rejection

  • Injury

  • Changes in relationships

  • Any change in our life

  • Racism

  • Xenophobia

  • Transphobia

  • Fatphobia

  • Any form of oppression
